Global Tribute: Roads Named After Dr BR Ambedkar Outside India – A Symbol of Equality Worldwide
Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, fondly known as Babasaheb, was the architect of the Indian Constitution, a champion of social justice, and a fighter against caste discrimination. His legacy extends far beyond India’s borders. In several countries, streets and avenues have been named in his honor, reflecting his universal message of equality, dignity, and human rights.
While India has countless roads bearing his name, at least four prominent streets outside India carry the name of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. Let’s explore these international tributes one by one.
1. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Avenue – Jersey City, New Jersey, USA
The pioneering road outside India named after Babasaheb is Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Avenue in Jersey City, New Jersey. This stretch (at the Tonnele and Pavonia intersection) was dedicated before 2014, making it the earliest international recognition of his contributions.

2. Ambedkar Way – Auckland, New Zealand
In August 2018, the city of Auckland, New Zealand, honored Dr. Ambedkar by naming a road Ambedkar Way. Located near the main entrance at 29 Pukekohe East Road, this street symbolizes New Zealand’s recognition of Babasaheb’s fight for social equality.

3. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Avenue – Kingston, Jamaica
On May 16, 2022, a historic moment unfolded when a section of Tower Street in downtown Kingston, Jamaica, was renamed Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Avenue. The inauguration was performed by then-President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind — marking the first time an Indian Head of State unveiled such a tribute abroad.
This avenue highlights the shared values of equality between India and Jamaica.

4. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Way – New York City, USA
The most recent addition came on June 25, 2023, when an intersection in Queens, New York (61st Street and Broadway, Woodside), was co-named Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Way. This holds special significance because Babasaheb studied at Columbia University in New York (1913–1916), earning multiple degrees including a PhD.
This makes it the second Ambedkar-named road in the United States.

Summary
Dr. BR Ambedkar’s vision of a just society continues to inspire the world. From the United States and New Zealand to Jamaica, these streets stand as lasting symbols of his fight against inequality. His message remains relevant globally — equality for all, irrespective of caste, race, or background.
